Could You Do With A Wardrobe Rehaul?
Wardrobe rehauls are essential every now and then. You can’t be wearing the same things
you always have been – although, if that beloved old comfy sweatshirt has survived over a
decade now, be sure to hang onto it!
But everything else in your wardrobe might be getting tired, old, and stale. And not even just
from a garment point of view. You may not feel the same kind of enthusiasm and confidence
when it comes to putting your outfits on. You might treat dressing as more of a chore than
anything else, and get absolutely no pleasure out embracing your own style at all.
And that just isn’t right. Even if you don’t consider yourself a super stylish person, who likes
to spend a lot of time on matching pieces together just right, you need to do something to get
that spark back.
99% of the time, that thing is a wardrobe rehaul. But let’s just double check this; here are the
questions that’ll help you determine if your clothes need disposing of or donating, and if you
need to go on a shopping trip.

How Do You Feel About the Current Contents of Your Wardrobe?
When you open up your wardrobe doors and see all your clothes laid bare in front of you,
how do you feel about them?
Have a root around to make sure you see the full collection. Pull each item out and lay it
down somewhere, in two separate piles. One side is ‘I like this’, the other is ‘I’m not sure/I
don’t like it’. Sort everything through until you run out of clothes.
Now, which side is bigger? If it’s the ‘I like’ side, then maybe a wardrobe rehaul isn’t
necessary just yet. Of course, if you don’t own too many things in the first place, and the
majority has ended up in this pile, it could be that you just don’t have a lot to choose from.
But if most of your clothing has ended up in the opposite pile, whether you didn’t know or
you didn’t like it at all, you’re overdue for a rehaul.
And this is also a good time to work out how your wardrobe got to this point. What’s
happened that’s led to most of the closet ending up in the reject pile?
Maybe you’ve followed a lot of trends in the past, with both good and bad results? Or that it’s
just that you forgot how much stuff you owned, and just haven’t had a good clearout in a
while?
It could be that you’re just a different person now, and that’s OK. It’s just time for your
wardrobe to catch up.
Is There Lots of Stuff That Doesn’t Suit You or Fit? (and is still cluttering up the
space!)
While you’re sorting through your wardrobe contents, ask yourself another question. How
many items ended up being put in the ‘I’m not sure/I don’t like’ pile because they either didn’t
suit you or didn’t fit you anymore?
If a lot of your articles got here because of this reason, you might want to reconsider your
style.
What would you like to wear? And in comparison, what do you think you have to wear?
Because you shouldn’t ever be buying things in the latter camp!
Think about the style icons you’ve learnt from, and the kind of clothing you’re drawn to when
you hit the stores.
And it’s never actually a bad thing to double check your measurements. You deserve to be
able to buy things that’ll fit and feel comfortable when you’re wearing them – and who hasn’t
bought a bra before that’s been just a little too snug?!
How Often Do You Make an Impulse Purchase?
Sometimes they pay off, most of the time they don’t. But the one or two times they do lull us
into a false sense of security. We start to think the style knowledge we have is infallible, and
all the clothing we buy will fit into our wardrobes no problem.
But the more impulse purchases we make, the less satisfied we tend to be with our clothing.
So the next time you’re tempted to grab something, think about why you actually want it. Will
it be a good addition to your wardrobe? Or is it only a sudden thought you’re just hoping will
work out?
Do You Have Something for Every Occasion?
Does your wardrobe contain every item of clothing, accessories, and shoes you could ever
need for any occasion? If not, you’ll want to think about that during your rehaul as well.
Because it’s good to be prepared for occasions of all kinds. Formal events like weddings and
work parties, as well as nightlife activities like going for a drink and dinners with friends.
You might not need a good cocktail dress or a professional skirt and blazer right now, but
who knows what’ll crop in the calendar in the future.
This is your chance to get acquainted with clothing you wouldn’t normally look twice at. You’ll
have time to find the styles, colors, and shapes you like, and you won’t feel the pressure of
trying to find appropriate attire on the fly.
Spend a bit more than you usually would on these pieces as well. This way you can be sure
the items will last longer, and you can whip them out time and time again when the need
calls for it.
Is a Wardrobe Rehaul in Your Near Future?
Maybe! Go through the checklist of questions above and see what stands out to you.
Do you feel like your wardrobe doesn’t quite feel like you? Are your clothes 50/50 when it
comes to things you like wearing and things you haven’t looked at twice? And how often do
you feel like you have nothing to wear for the occasion ahead?
No matter how well stocked your wardrobe is, you might need to go through, get rid, and
start all over again.
