This Winter in Sydney is unexpectedly cold and very long. The weather has been windy and damp with very little sunshine available. It started to rain again in the morning and I decided to lift my spirit by going on an excursion on a dull and grey looking day.

The ferry trip from Pyrmont Bay to Circular Quay is short and sweet. From Circular Quay I could easily walk to the idyllic Royal Botanic Garden and take a tour inside the Governor’s House. Having lived in Sydney for nearly 20 years, I’ve never get the chance to walk inside the Governor’s House located in the Royal Botanic Garden. It’d be nice and quiet with not many people around because of the cold weather right? That was the plan for the day any way.

On the Ferry From Pyrmont Bay to Circular Quay

In the spirit of embracing black coloured outfits (I used to avoid wearing anything black), I wrapped myself up in this black wool coat by Marc Jacobs together with a pair of black leather boots. It proved to be a good choice as I felt really warm and comfortable in them the whole time. On the other hand, I was so wrong in predicting that there wouldn’t be many people around. The Royal Botanic Garden was occupied by armies of school kids. Looked like all school kids in Sydney area went out to the same place, on the same day, the same time. The Governor’s house is also closed for the day due to a function.

Haha, things never go according the plan but never mind that. I walked around the Circular Quay area, took many photos like a tourist and enjoyed a wonderful lunch in the city.

It was a perfect day out indeed. So glad I went out for some fresh air and also was congratulated by my phone that more than 10,000 steps was made. How did the Opera House look in a grey, not so good looking day? It was just as perfect as always, with its sexy curves and points and all.

Furniture Design Trends

In the last century furniture has been a rollercoaster of design. Many of these past trends have inspired much of the furniture available today. Key Furniture Design Trends of the Past Century

To determine what stylish furniture will look like in the years to come, it can be helpful to look at where we have been. During the 20th Century the functionality and style of furniture has evolved dramatically.

These are the key furniture design trends of the past century.

1900s to the 1910s
Furniture deign trends - Art Nouvea Sofa

An Art Nouveau Sofa

In the beginning of the 20th Century, Art Nouveau furniture was popular. It was a trend that borrowed and developed craftsmanship techniques of an earlier period.

It is recognisable by its curvy, accentuated lines. Using polished wood and featuring ornamental designs inspired by flowers, nature and the female form.

1919 to 1933

During this period Bauhaus began to take hold. It originated in Germany at an art and design school famous for its furniture design. Starkly different from Art Nouveau, this style was truly no frills.

It abandoned decoration for functionality, finding design form in its simplicity. As a sign of things to come, many Bauhaus pieces were mass produced.

1920s to the 1940s
Furniture Design Trends - Art Deco Desk

An Art Deco Wooden Desk

From the twenties to the forties, Art Deco became hugely popular. Art Deco was inspired by cubism and the industrialisation of post-war life.

It made use of many materials like stainless steel and lacquered timber. Other features included symmetrical patterns and rounded edges.

1940s to the 1950s

Mid Century Modern began in the 1940’s in response to the shrewdness and minimalism promoted by the war effort.

Inspired by the function of Art Deco, Mid Century Modern took it a step further and focussed primarily on function. Materials included chrome, formica and vinyl, think “Retro Fifties Diner”.

1930s to the 1970s
Furniture Design Trends - Scandinavian Design Table

A Scandinavian-style Table

Scandinavian design became popular in the thirties lasting until the seventies. The minimalism and simplicity of Scandinavian design continue to inspire designers today.

Scandinavian furniture was functional, affordable and striking. Mass production became easier, and low cost materials were developed. This meant that many could afford Scandinavian designer furniture.

1960s to the 1980s

No longer minimalist, the design trends of the late 20th century were now bright and unique. Clashes of colour and pattern became the norm.

In the sixties and seventies, shades of brown, yellow and green seemed to mirror our new understanding of the environment.

In the eighties, Late 20th Century Rebellion peaked with monochromatic rooms with pops of bright colours.

1990s

In the 1990s, furniture design settled down. Minimalism was in. Materials like timber were now lighter. Rooms were white and coupled with neutral or pastel palettes.

Furniture became comfortable and durable. Sofas were now upholstered in stripes and floral designs.

Minimalism design went back to basics. It was inspired by Scandinavian design and deterred by the rebellion of the 1980s.

Furntiture Design Trends - A Minimalist Dining Table

2000s

In the 21st Century people got serious about sustainability. Furniture design is now inspired by a mix of everything from the last century, but with a new eco friendly twist.

Designer furniture has become mass produced, and replicas are sold at reasonable prices. Everyone can enjoy good design nowadays.

Sections 5-6 have vintage clothing, and you’ll find art in Sections 7-9, Sections 10-24 offer a real mix of miscellaneous stuff, while Sections 25-27 are dedicated to crafts and home-decor items.

A leisurely stroll on the beach after work in a crisp, sunny winter afternoon. I clearly looked a little tired and wrapped myself in layers of winter woollies.

But soon, everything felt perfect. Sunshine, pure blue sky, perfectly clear, blue ocean and fresh air – just enough to bring a smile on everyone’s face.

When you think about all of the furniture in your home and which is the most comfortable to you, the odds are pretty good that you are going to select your sofa. There is something about the sofa that everyone seems to fall in love with right away. It does not seem to matter if it is an individual sofa, part of a set or a sectional sofa; people are automatically drawn to the sofa and fall in love with the one they have in their home. It can be just centre piece you need to liven up your living room, family room or den. When you think about, there are actually a number of reasons why you love to have a good couch in your home, including:

  • It is Comfortable – There is something about a nice couch that is just so inviting and comfortable. The moment you sit down on it you can feel yourself relaxing and feeling better, especially if you are just coming home after a long day of work and running around. You can plop yourself down on the couch, kick your shoes off and relax as you watch TV, read, listen to music or take a nap.
  • It Brings People Together – A good couch is going to be the centre of whatever room it is in. This is going to naturally bring people to it, making your couch the focal point of the room and a place where everyone is going to gather. When you think about all of the fun times you have together with your family and friends, during holidays, parties or get-togethers, you probably remember everyone being around the couch. It will bring everyone together for play time, movie time or conversation time.
  • It Makes the Room Look Great – A nice sofa makes all of the difference in the room. When you shop at furniture stores in Melbourne, you will find that your line of sight is immediately drawn to the sofa and the way it looks and how everything is arranged around it. If you select just the right pattern and the right kind of upholstery, whether it is leather, fabric or something else, you know it is going to stand out among the other pieces in the room. There is nothing quite like a stylish sofa or sofa set to help make the entire room look beautiful.

You know that you love your couch and why, and it might be time for you to think about investing in a new one for your home. There are so many choices out there, so do your research and only get what’s the best for you. The Furniture People offers some of the best designer couches and sofas in Melbourne, so you can get just what you need for your home. You will be able to find the level of comfort and beauty that can be part of your household for many years to come.

Bought this Summer, this is my first ever red dress. Apart from dressing up for to have some photos taken, I don’t see any other occasions it could be had. I was buying it regardless. To me, it was like fulfilling childhood dreams – to dance freely in a large circle skirt, in a far far away land.

Well Australia is quite far away from any other continent and Mt Wilson is about 100km west from Sydney – not particularly close either. I was too intimidated to wear anything red when I was young. Grey and brown coloured outfits were my wardrobe staples. But now? I don’t care that much. You see, age is a good thing. It gives you confidence. It makes you do whatever pleases you.

This year at Mercedes_Benz Fashion Week, I learned to sit back and enjoy watching the show more, instead of being busy taking photos. After all, I’d received loads of runway, and backstage photos from the PR agent to use for my blog.

Below are just some of my atmosphere shots to help me remember this full-on event of the year.

Australian Luxe Wet Active brand, duskii, presented their Resort 17 Collection “Paradis” at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in SWIM, on Thursday May 19 2016, 3:00pm at The Runway, Carriageworks.

Paradis” is a collection inspired by the cultural mix that inhabits the North African kingdom of Morocco.

From the historic raids of the Marrakech Medina to the allure of the Moroccan hammam and oasis of the Jardin Majarelle, “Paradis”  tries to transport you to a world of Arabic Africa and bohemian glamour.

Which one is your top pick from this collection?

Not typically my cup of tea even when I was a teen but definitely interesting to watch.

You kids have fun!

You’ve probably all heard of the term “Rest Bitch Face”. I guess that face belongs to cool people.

When my face is in a natural resting state, I look worried. It’s a 100% Resting Worried Look. In the old days, I normally put my boring smiling face on in front the camera. Not any more. J & I go out to shoot quite often & we’d have a lot of fun shooting in different locations and for different looks/expressions. Truth to be told, J is much more natural in front of camera than me. It took me years to shake off that awkward smile when the camera is pointing at me.

Nowadays I could do calm and relaxed look. Seriously, who wouldn’t feel relaxed when you have this calm ocean view right in front of you?

One of the reasons I love my job is that we get to explore different locations with different perspectives. Though I’m a Sydney sider and have been to Sydney Little Bay a few times, one particular job led us to revisit this place for some fresh shooting ideas.

Starting from last year, I made the effort to remember having a few outfits photos taken while scouting locations. As always, we left in a rush so I just had my favorite Ray Ban sunglasses on and quickly grabbed a straw hat on the way out.

Needless to say, I’m a designer handbag addict. This is the first time I bought a cheaper clutch online. It looked good online and the feature of a detachable golden chain to convert the clutch to a hand-free sling bag convinced me it’d be a good buy. I was pretty happy to take it out the first time and have some photo taken with it. The thing is, that golden chain kept coming off the hock that is supposed to attach it to the clutch.

So after a few minutes, there I was, holding on my clutch with the chain dangling in one hand, my sandals in the other, camera bag on my shoulder, climbing the stairs up from the beach.  Looks a bit untidy, but such is reality right?

Ladies, trust me, expensive handbags are so worth it!

Botany Bay Sydney

A pleasant afternoon walk around my favorite bay area in Sydney – Botany Bay, where Captain Cook landed nearly 250 years ago.

I’m not someone who wear shorts often but like buying them all the time for some reason. This pair of white shorts is the only one of many other white ones that I can fit into right now. It matches nicely with my white long fish tail top.

J was not very happy that I used the picture of me standing again the red, rusty door for instagram:

“It was only the very first test shot, and the pose is so boring.”

“But I love it so much!” I said, “It’s unpretentious and it’s me.”

“You are trying too hard to blend in. Too afraid to stand out.” J concluded.

I thought about that for a minute. Maybe he’s right about me trying too hard to blend in but I still love this photo of me standing in front of that gorgeous door!

Wollongong is about one hour and a half’s drive from Sydney. Over the years, I’ve grown fonder and fonder of this coastal town. The beach is nice and long over there and it’s not overly crowded like Sydney beaches even on a nice sunny day.

I was finally brave enough to take some beach shots in Bikini 2 months ago. Now finally brave enough to put a few pictures up on my blog… Ha. I know what my older sister is going to say: Take them down! How can you put bikini photos online?? You look like a ….! Mum doesn’t even know I have a blog. Can’t even imagine her reaction if she finds out. Well, my family is not that open minded.

It’s marked to be a set of high waisted bikini but still didn’t go high enough. Nevertheless, I love the color and style of this set so they are good enough for me.

I’m still on the hunt of a perfect set of high weighed bikini. So if you know where to find them, please do let me know!

Never thought it was that windy. J and I went out for a walk just before the sunset the other day around the neighbourhood. The sun was glowing softly and the temperature was just perfect but oh my. The wind.

It was surprisingly windy, so I kinda regretted wearing a flowy silk dress and hoped there was a hairband handy to tie my hair up. We managed to have some photos that looked calm but that naughty wind kept blowing my dress up, my hair all over the place. My hands were very busy pulling my dress down and holding my hair away from my eyes so I could see the world. One thing for sure to remember: always wear great underwear!

On the flip side, we had a lot of fun playing with light and shadows against a red wall. The crazy wind, my crazy hair and crazy shadow just worked perfectly together. This is the picture I’m falling in love with:

Kirribili is one of my favorite vantage points that offers brilliant views to Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Those photos were taken last month on Boxing day ( 26th December). It was heavily overcast when we first arrived and the rain started rushing down after 20 minutes or so. You can probably see some rain drops in the last photo.

I decided to wear a white top with this black lace skirt to go with a classic black and white theme. This white top is quite unique not only because it’s pleated in different ways but also because it has 2 different kind of straps: one shoulder strap has 2 rows of small pearls. A long strand of pear necklace is then inevitably added to compete the outfit.

Instead of pure black or white shoes, I picked these pair of Manolo Blahnik leather sandals with those hot pink crystal rings on them. Hot pink isn’t at all serious as black and white but given it’s Christmas time, public holiday and all that, a bit of right color seemed appropriate.
